A Simple Cure by Lawrence W. Gold, M.D.
Grass Valley, CA – Dr. Lawrence Gold has released his new medical thriller, A Simple Cure.
A Simple Cure engages the reader in the search for the cure of malignant melanoma. While an uncommon skin cancer, one American dies of melanoma almost every hour (every 61 minutes). The incidence rate has tripled in the last twenty years. When nature, in her ultimate act of irony, strikes Richard Powell, a cancer specialist, with malignant melanoma, a highly aggressive form of cancer, his wife, Terri devotes her life to curing the disease that ultimately kills her husband.
While research laboratories are characterized as noble in search of cures, and proprietary drug companies are caricatured as ruthless and materialistic, too often, the distinctions aren’t so clear. The murder of a drug courier to obtain an experimental and promising treatment for malignant melanoma, unleashes a chain of devastating consequences. People for Alternative Treatment, a company created to find cures for rare diseases, had fallen on hard times and become a subsidiary of Kendall Pharmaceuticals, a company with very different values. Experimentation with a vaccine against tuberculosis is showing surprising effects in controlling malignant melanoma at PAT and UC Medical Center.

WHOOPS!

I have sound logical reasons for missing the last couple days. SURGERY. Fun stuff. This is a prime example of the things that can butt heads with your writing.

Day 10: Your write mode:
What is your writing mode? What I mean is not whether it is argumentative or persuasive. I'm talking about distractions. Are you easily distracted? Do you have a lot of distractions going on? Most likely, you do. Life gets in the way...

During NaNoWriMo it is very important to keep those distractions to a minimum. Prepare your loved ones for what is coming. Create a sign that says: Keep out, I'm writing! Let people know when you are going to be writing. Let them know not to expect clean clothes or cooked dinners every evening. Prepare! Prepare! Prepare!

Decisions and Excuses

Indecisiveness

For the last two or three weeks (or maybe two or three months) I have been teetering on the fine line of whether I will be participating in this year’s National Novel Writing Month challenge. Last year I didn’t know until the very last week of October whether I was going to because I hadn’t even thought of the challenge. Then that last week rolled in and I began to hear the voices…dream the scenes. I didn’t know at first that a story was brewing inside me. I really didn’t. That in itself surprised me because I can normally notice those things the moment they begin happening. However I was deep deep deep into writing a fantasy novel with my co-writer William and he and I were trudging along and were so very close to finishing the book.

My focus was on something bigger. Sometimes the big things, well, often the big things take all our attention, you know? And this is exactly what was happening to me.  So when I heard a small voice was telling me things and then I began seeing the story unfold within the shadows of my dreams and later my consciousness I realized I had a story that I needed to write. I told my partner I had to step away from the novel we were currently working on and he was totally cool with that. He even stepped up to the plate and said he too would participate in the challenge.

NaNoWriMo Preparation Day 9 of 14

Today its all about Food and Drink!

Enduring 30 days of intense writing is going to steal your attention away from a number of things. Family, chores, dentist appointments (egads!)…you get my point. You’ll also forget to eat at times; especially during the highs where you are speed-typing (or writing) because everything is going abso-freaking-fantabulous and the last thing you would consider is tearing yourself away to stuff your growling, starving body.

But eat you must.

So get together a heaping portion of snack foods. Energy bars, slim jims, apples, poptarts, beef jerky, bananas,  cereal bars, and whatever is easy to tear open with your teeth (your hands will be busy) and swallow down in a couple bites or less. If you could ingest your food through a tube I promise there will be times where you would be paying for this amenity. Grab a basket or something and throw all your foodies (play on goodies, duh) and put it next to wherever you will be writing. If you are a traveling writer, keep your bag stuffed with the proper supplies and keep refills easily accessible.

Do you have a Problem?

Okay? I don’t mean you specifically. I mean your protagonist. Does your main character have a problem? What is it?

If your character doesn’t have a problem…well, you my friend DO have a problem.

Your story needs TENSION. And by tension I mean problems. What is your character’s main problem throughout the entire story.

There are different ways you can go about this:
1.      Time is running out.

Your character might have a limited amount of time to do something or find something.

TIP AND THE GIPPER
by Chris Matthews

From the author of the New York Times bestseller Jack Kennedy—and Tip O’Neill’s former chief-of-staff—comes the firsthand, one-of-a-kind story of the friendship between President Reagan and the Speaker of the House. They were the political odd couple—the two most powerful men in the country, a pair who, in author Chris Matthews’s words, “couldn’t be more different or more the same.” For six years Matthews was on the inside, watching the evolving relationship between President Ronald Reagan and Speaker of the House Tip O’Neill. Their philosophies were miles apart—Reagan intent on scaling back government, O’Neill fervent in defending it. Yet there was common ground too: long lunches shared on St. Patrick’s Day and a mutual respect—political and personal. Three days after Reagan’s shooting, Tip was the first outsider at the president’s bedside.

Drawing not only on his own remarkable knowledge but on extensive interviews with those closest to his subjects, Matthews brings this unlikely friendship to life in his unique voice, rendering as lively and novelistic a read as Jack Kennedy and a timely object lesson in how bipartisan cooperation can work.

Beloved by her readers, special to the poet’s own heart, Mary Oliver’s dog poems offer a special window into her world. Dog Songs collects some of the most cherished poems together with new works, offering a portrait of Oliver’s relationship to the companions that have accompanied her daily walks, warmed her home, and inspired her work.
