Former Surgeon releases new medical thriller
A story of ethical dilemmas, family challenges, murder, deceit, and love.
SALT LAKE CITY, UT – Dr. William H. Coles, former surgeon and current teacher of creative writing, has blended his unique background as a national leader in surgical education into his award-winning new novel, Guardian of Deceit.
Coles creates a fascinating character-driven story of Darwin, a brilliant youth who seeks the love of family he knew with his deceased parents, and works to become a doctor like his father. He becomes the responsibility of a new guardian, a celebrity football star, who has gathered in his Hamptons’ mansion a mismatch of humanity—a bizarre yet often caring new family—and who blocks Darwin’s access to his resources and forces him into a modern servitude.
Darwin’s physician mentor holds secrets that force Darwin to question his mentor’s integrity and his own choice of profession, and the mentor’s two beautiful, socially-prominent daughters crave love but, as Darwin discovers, neither have the capacity to truly love any but themselves.
Coles teaches writers the skills of literary fiction with unique vibrant memorable characters, character-based dramatic plots, and realistic and credible story structure with meaning that addresses the human condition. Guardian of Deceit was a finalist in both the 2011 and 2012 William Faulkner Creative Writing Competition. Coles melds modern social issues of medical malpractice, love and lust, drugs, and sexual harassment into Darwin’s unusual world of celebrities, miscreants, saints and sinners.
