Joy to the World Three Dog Night Lyric Review

By JccKeith

TGIFLRT!  That means, Thank Goodness It's Friday Lyric Review Time!

I have been hearing this song since I was a kid.  Joy to the World is not played as often as some others but I hear it every now and again on the classic rock stations.  It is a classic.  It’s catchy, easy to understand and remember.  Knowing someone, as I do, named Jeremiah, it was common to hear people say the first line of this song.

For those of you who don’t know the song I’ve included a clip.  For the rest of you, who maybe didn’t understand some of the terms used or didn’t really pay attention, I have the lyrics.  I’ve even taken time out of my busy Friday to analyze, or at least explain, the lyrics for you.

Joy to the World Lyrics by Three Dog Night:

Jeremiah was a bullfrog  [Jeremiah, good name, by the way, was a guy with a deep voice or a good buddy.  The term bullfrog was at one time a commonly used slang word for a guy with a deep or gravelly and sometimes hard to understand voice.  I cannot offer any verification of that, as I looked all over the internet to find a reference but all I have is what I remember hearing it was when I was a kid in the late 70s and early 80s.  According to the internet, in those times it was also CB slang for a ‘good buddy.’  For those who have no idea what a CB is, it was before cell phones and even pagers, it was a radio system many people had in their vehicles or homes.  CB technically means Citizens’ Band radio, you had a radio, antenna and a walkie talkie type thing that you spoke into and heard others speak through connected with a cord to the radio/system]

Was a good friend of mine [Based on this follow up line, I believe it references bullfrog being a good buddy]

I never understood a single word he said [Then this follow up line references someone with a deep or hard to understand voice]

But I helped him drink his wine [I often assisted him with imbibing alcoholic beverages made from fermented grapes with him]

And he always had some mighty fine wine [The alcohol made from fermented grapes he often had was quite good]

Joy to the World [I wish everyone on the planet happiness]

All the boys and girls  [I wish happiness to all male and female children]

Joy to the fishes in the deep blue sea [I even wish happiness to all of the fish present in the deeper regions of the larger bodies of blue saline water possibly connected to oceans or perhaps lacking a natural outlet]

Joy to you and me [I wish happiness to you and to myself]

If I were the king of the world [If I were the male chief authority figure, probably through inherited rite, of the entire planet]

Tell you what I’d do [I will inform you of my intentions]

I’d throw away the cars and the bars and the war [I’d get rid of all vehicles, all retail business establishments which sell alcohol, and the organized, prolonged conflicts between groups, parties, states, or organizations –or this could be seen, in light of the situation at the time of this song’s writing, as him saying he’d get rid of all the cars (pollution, money related problems), places where people go to drink and hang out, and the wars going on at the time and in this way, unite everyone]

Make sweet love to you  [fornicate nicely or perhaps passionately with you]

Sing it now

Joy to the World [see previous explanation on these lines]
All the boys and girls
Joy to the fishes in the deep blue sea
Joy to you and me

You know I love the ladies  [He really likes females]

Love to have my fun  [He likes to do things with females, most likely things of a sexual nature]

I’m a high life flyer and a rainbow rider  [Someone who is a high life flyer is one who through hard work is now successful at what he/she does, so he is saying he is a successful person and a rainbow rider is a drug reference, could be smoking pot, could be doing LSD, basically someone who gets high through drugs =he has a good time]

A straight shootin son-of-a-gun  [He’s a good guy, this is NOT any sort of reference to homosexuality or heterosexuality, at that time, such was not the major cultural topic it is now]

I said a straight shootin son of a gun [He repeats, he is a good guy]

Chorus repeat 8X (For the most part, he throws in a little mix around or shortening of some of the words in each chorus but they’re pretty much the same words till the end of the song)

There it is folks.  The lyrics are just a good time, happy song wishing everyone, including aquatic creatures and children, joy.  Listen and enjoy.  Joy to you and yours.
