Super Freak Lyric Review

By JccKeith
It's been a long day so I thought I'd take it easy this Friday night.  I searched Rolling Stone magazine's 500 greatest songs of all time for a good song to review.  I'll admit, I wasn't searching for a song this week with the deepest meanings.  That and I only made it a couple of clicks through to number 481 on their website.  Super Freak by Rick James.  I like the song, most people do, and it's catchy.

Super Freak was released in August 1980 and became a big hit.  The name of the song, Super Freak is fairly easy to understand.  Freak is a slang term, as James said in an interview, for 'a very kinky girl.'

But hey, for a look at the song's lyrics, here they are:

She's a very kinky girl  [She's not your prudish, unadventurous type of lady - she's the kind of girl who likes the freaky stuff]

The kind you don't take home to mother  [She's not a girl you'd want your mother knowing you're with]

She will never let your spirits down  [She's always up for sex and will always keep you hard]

Once you get her off the street, ow girl  [She's a streetwalker, a prostitute type]

She likes the boys in the band  [She's a groupie, likes the fellows who make the music]

She says that I'm her all-time favorite  [She tells me I'm the best lover she's ever had]

When I make my move to her room it's the right time  [When I go to her hotel/motel room it's time for sex]

She's never hard to please  [She gets off really easily because she likes it all]

That girl is pretty wild now  [She's pretty crazy]

The girl's a super freak  [She likes the kinky and wild sex]

The kind of girl you read about

In a new wave magazine  [New wave is a sub-genre of rock music that arrived in the 1970's about the same time as puck music.  It is experimental, out there stuff in a new-wave magazine, so you would read about a pretty exciting, crazy woman in there]

That girl is pretty kinky

The girl's a super freak

I'd really love to taste her  [I believe he is saying he wants to go down on her, technically speaking, he would like to perform cunnilingus on her]

Every time we meet  [Every time we get together]

She's all right, she's all right  [She is great, she's great]

That girl's all right with me, yeah  [I really like her]

She's a super freak, super freak

She's super freaky, yow

Super freak, super freak

She's a very special girl  [She has some unique talents and interests]

The kind of girl you want to know  [She's the kind of woman you want to have sex with]

From her head down to her toenails  [She's hot from head to toe]

Down to her feat, yeah  [Rick James might just have a foot fetish

And she'll wait for me backstage with her girlfriends  [She's a groupie and she brings her girl friends to join in the fun, most likely sexual activities]

In a limousine  [A limousine is a long stretch luxury car, frequently used by celebrities]

Going back in Chinatown  [Slang for they're using cocaine after the show]

Three's not a crowd to her, she says  [She tell's him she's up for a menage a trois, a.k.a. a threesome]

"Room 714, I'll be waiting"  [She tells him to meet her in room 714, she'll be there when he arrives]

When I get there she's got incense, wine and candles  [He shows up and she's got the set up with the aroma, alcohol and candlelight]

It's such a freaky scene  [It's wild]

Temptations Sing!  [The Temptations, a famous singing group sang background for this song]

Super freak, super freak

That girl's a super freak

She's a very kinky girl

The kind you don't take home to mother

She will never let your spirits down

Once you get her off the street, ow girl

Blow, Danny

That's about it.  What did you expect?  Not every hit song has some deeper meaning or rich insightful thoughts on life.  Sometimes, it's just fun and catchy.
