Joseph Conrad says...

By Michala T.

A writing tip based on Joseph Conrad’s quote:

“A man’s most open actions have a secret side to them.”

Look at one of your leading characters. It could be your protagonist or their sidekick. It might be your antagonist. Whoever you are writing today, right now, give them a secret. Look at the way they behave and the words they speak. Now look beneath them and find out what their secret it. They have one. I promise you they do. You just have to find it.

When you find out what this secret is, continue writing with this character but now look at how their actions slowly begin to reveal throughout the story what their secret is. Is this secret going to crush them when found out? Is it going to break up their relationship? Is it going to get them fired? Is it that they are dying and refuse to write that will?
Once you find their secret, writing the character will be so much more fun!
