Opinion/Rant/Rave: Why I like Halloween Edition

By: William G. Muir
I am not a big fan of horror movies in general. I am not at all fascinate with Zombie. Have no love for Vampires. To me Mummies, and Zombies, are just plan boring. Ghost I could careless for. And even thought Werewolves are my favorite among all the monsters, they do nothing to bring passion to my soul.

These monster do nothing to provoke any real emotion. They certainly do not scare me; I can't think of anytime since the age of five that I was scared by any horror monster monster/killer.

A no I will not use the cliche that horror movies do not scare me because real life is scary enough. To me that is what pretentiousness hipster say when they wish to sound cooler than everybody else.

With that said I love Halloween. And not only because it is the start of the holiday season. A season that start with Halloween and ends on New Years Day. No I love Halloween because it is one of the few times of the year that are truly ourselves. For most of the year we wear a variety of masks when present our selves to the world. The hard working employee to our boss, the loving and supporting partner to our spouses or lovers, loyal companion to our friends.

Sure their is large part of ourselves weaved into these all mask . Yet we are never those thinks every minute of everyday of the year. There are times we have to pray that those mask do not slip even one inch.

But at Halloween time we replace the mask that the world expects us to wear with ones that we chose for ourselves. We look deep inside ourselves, deep into our souls, into our very essences and we find who it is that is lurking there. And for a short period of time we let them out to roam upon the face of the Earth.

Maybe it is much easier to be ourselves at this time of year? Maybe it is because Halloween is just one day out of the year? Maybe if Halloween encompassed the whole of the calender year we would start to become as phony with our celebrations as we are with our everyday lives?

It's the fact that Halloween comes once a year that makes it so special. And it is that uniqueness of it's short visit that allows us to enjoy it so much. If Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas or whatever holidays you hold dear were longer than they already are we would become sick of them in a relatively short amount of time. And that is real a shame.

It's a shame because it is in those brief moments that we allow ourselves to be who we really. When we let the mask we hide behind slip away. It is those moments that make the rest of the year bearable. It is memory of the laughter we share; recalled visions of those we love enjoying themselves; it the remember images of a child's smile that keep driving us.

If you happen to be one of those people that turn up their noses at the thought of celebrating Halloween. If you think you have out grown wearing costumes and gorging yourself on Snicker Bars; Tootsie Rolls and Dum Dums then please think again. You are never to old to have a good time. So breakout the hobo makeup, grab yourself a pillow case and head out the door for some good ole fashion Tick-or-Treating.
